Going to parks and recreation industry events is a key part of building your networks and developing yourself to perform as well as possible. With the well-being of your communities in your hands, we find it very important to get involved some of these, at least every year or two.
2016 was a great year for conferences and a lot of knowledge and resources were shared amongst the industry. 2017 seems to be shaping up in the same way and we don’t want any of you to miss out. Here are some of our top choices for parks and recreation events that have been announced, with the addition of a few international days and months that promote well-being.
mParks Conference & Trade Show | Jan 31 - Feb 3, 2017
Michigan Recreation and Park Association hosts one of the best statewide conferences and it’s one of the first ones of the year. This time around, their theme is “Happy Places, Happy People”, with the conference happening at the Amway Grand Hotel and DeVos Place in Grand Rapids. We’re looking forward to seeing how they embrace happiness, in their quest to boost well-being.
California Park and Recreation Society Conference | February 28 - March 3, 2017
The 2017 CPRS Conference & Expo is returning to Sacramento, to help parks and rec professionals learn, network and grow. Full of educational sessions, networking and special events like wellness sessions and tours, it’s a great opportunity to expand your mind and form new ideas for supporting your community. International Day of Happiness | March 20, 2017
The United Nations-sanctioned International Day of Happiness is a great opportunity for your parks and recreation organization to help boost the well-being of your community. Major factor in one’s happiness and overall well-being can be heavily impacted by parks and recreation. Building out some awesome events that show how parks and recreation can affect one’s happiness can help build your organization’s visibility.
This year’s conference will be hosted at the beautiful Fairmont Chateau Whistler, allowing guests to explore one of the best mountain resorts in the world. Last year’s theme was “Elevating Recreation”, exploring the importance of recreation and how we can continually evolve how our communities partake in it. National Physical Fitness and Sports Month | May, 2017
Physical activity is so important for well-being, yet so many families don’t stay active as much as they should. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services shares a number of resources, to help you keep your community moving.

While us parks and recreation folk understand the importance of what we do, many community members may take it for granted. A key part of this month is trying to change that. Yoga is one of the most popular programs for many parks and recreation organizations. However, we featured it because of its embodiment of well-being. Hosting citywide yoga events has been shows to be a great way to get more people on board with this life-enriching activity, while boosting the host organization’s visibility. Win-win!
International Play Association Conference | September, 2017
Hosted in Calgary, the 20th edition of the IPA Triennial World Conference will become a meeting place for people from all over the globe to discuss the importance of play. With the attendees consisting of play researchers, practitioners and advocates, you’re sure to leave this one with a lot of applicable knowledge to use at your organization.
National Recreation and Park Association Annual Conference | September 26-28, 2017
Easily one of the largest and well-known parks and recreation conferences takes place in New Orleans, Louisiana. Every year, the NRPA sets the benchmark for parks and recreation conferences and they will certainly be doing the same in 2017.
