Social Media Outreach

With the popularity of social media, it’s becoming easier and easier to market your brand and your business to people for little to no cost. Before the advent of social media networks, you would have to resort to cold calling, door-to-door sales, and networking and promoting at events, if you wanted to engage prospects on a one-on-one basis. Now with social media, you can do this in a much more effective, less aggressive manner. One thing to note is that social media outreach is not reactive; outreach does not consist of merely replying to people engaging with you. Scheduling topical content is also not reflective of outreach. With that in mind, here are some tips for effective social media outreach:

Create Individual Relationships

Try not to engage people in a business-first approach. Rather than bringing up your product or service right off the bat, engage them in a conversational way. That prevents them from getting defensive or thinking that you are just trying to sell them something. Be specific and be positive: show that you are actually interested in what they are saying and not that they are just one of hundreds of people you are messaging. This topic also touches on community. While this potential customer is not one of your customers yet, they can still feel like they are part of your community, if there are lots of mutual interactions.

Network-specific Strategies

On Facebook, you can’t directly engage individuals as your company. One thing you can do though is find complimentary businesses’ pages and engage with them. This allows any of their followers to see your interactions, as well as creating community with fellow local businesses. On Twitter, you can create searches to find relevant conversations that you can interact with. We will have a deeper guide for you on our blog at a later time on this topic. On Instagram, liking and commenting on other people’s images is a great way for them to check out your Instagram feed. Keep in mind, it’s really important to have your most recent few images to be top-notch when you are doing outreach. Most people will only take a quick look and decide in a very short amount of time whether they want to follow you or not. Search through relevant hashtags and start engaging the public.

Do Your Research

Before engaging someone, take a second to look at their interests or topics of choice. This way you, will be able to engage them in a more thoughtful manner that will evoke more responses than generic messages sent to a large number of people. Quality is greater than quantity here. At the end of the day, you want to convert prospects and leads into customers. By spending some time being thoughtful and diligent, you’ll be able to convert people in no time.
